Stonehaven-- My favorite Castle!

Stonehaven -- My Favorite Castle

Dunnottar is by far my favorite castle.  It was such a pretty day so we decided we would drive into Stonehaven and see what all they had there for us to see.  We have heard some stories about the Dunnottar castle and that if we look close, we could see some whales or even seals.  We thought we might just need to go and have a look for ourselves.

This is the entrance to the castle.

It was a long walk to the castle but a very pretty one.  The sky here is so blue and the water is just beautiful.

This is a room that had been remodeled to look just like the dining room as it was before.  Denman had to run around the table of course.  Guess he thought he was at home!

This was a small area that had a hole in the wall where you could see the ocean.

This is the view from that very small hole.
I could sit here and look at this all day.  It was so peaceful.

Had to check this one out!

This was the Brewery.  It was a huge hole in the ground and had three other holes around it.

We spotted a seal.  They were all swimming around and Denman had to get closer to see it.

I know this picture is pretty, but to see all of this in person is just breathtaking!

The best part about this castle it that you actually felt like you were really in a castle.  The walls were mostly still there and you could see where each room started and stopped.

Denman liked running around in between the buildings.

The grass is always so green.

Denman said... "That door is locked. Guess they don't want us to get into that one today."
He cracks me UP!

This stairway went up to a tiny room.  It took us forever to get the kids to come down from it.

This is the view out of the window up there.

Natalie liked this one and said that it reminded her of a church.

She would run from one side of the room to the next trying to see it ALL!  It was hard to keep up with her.  We had to split up so we didn't loose one of them.

Natalie liked it when she would find a window where she could see from one room to the next.

Representing TEXAS in Dunnottar Castle.

Denman found markings all over the castle.  He said it was like finding the Mickey Mouse faces at Disney World.  :)

We had 150 stairs to climb back up so we had to get moving and this is what we saw when we looked back.

Denman continued to find places to hide while Natalie passed by.

Before we headed back the kids decided they wanted to go down and see if they could see the seals from the beach.  They had a little area where the kids could go down and throw rocks and play so we headed down to see what we could see.

Natalie loved getting the rocks to skip across the water or even skip off of another rock.

I loved the view we had so thought it would be a great photo op.. Natalie ended up taking five pictures before she was satisfied.  Wonder where she gets that? ... :)

Denman was running around throwing rocks, playing in the water, and now wanted something to eat.

It was a perfect place to take a break!  I still can't believe we are living in Scotland!

The seals came out again.  They started splashing around and Denman thought that was so funny!

Natalie sat on this rock for a long time.  When she came back from exploring, she was singing this is the day that the Lord has made.  Warmed my heart!

They all wanted to go and check out what was on the other side of the hill.

I love that Natalie takes time to just sit and take it all in.

Denman loves the rocks.  He has a HUGE collection that he begs to take back every time we leave a castle.  Not sure what law that would break so we always leave them there.

We saw a couple getting their wedding pictures by the castle.  Natalie watched them walk all the way back.

This was their get away car.

This is the view looking back.

We made it up the MILLION stairs.  Denman got a ride most of the way, but we made it!

The colors here are just so bright!

It amazes me how all of the castles are still standing and right by a cliff.

I took a few more pictures of the scenery because I know next time we go it could be raining. :)

So now you know.... if you come to Scotland, you MUST go to Stonehaven and see Dunnottar Castle.  It was a GREAT way to spend the day!
