Denman gets his cast off!
This was such an exciting day for us or at least it was at first. Denman couldn't wait to get his cast off. To name just a few things that had become hard for us, buttoning pants, bathing, climbing monkey bars, sleeping with both hands behind his head, twirling his hair, putting on clothes, and so on and so on. Those are just the ones that bothered him DAILY!!
So needless to say.. MOMMA and DENMAN are ready to get some cast relief. I must say that it was a little scary when they came out with a SAW to cut it off. Probably should have prepared myself for that one because I am sure that my gasp didn't help Denman feel very at ease.
He first gave Denman a set of ear phones to help with the noise of the saw. He showed him where he was going to cut and how he would take the cast off.
He then began to cut off the cast. Denman was so brave. I was so proud of him. He sat so still the whole time. He was sitting in my lap and holding my other hand and watching his EVERY move as he began to cut.
As he got down to the bottom of the cast he asked if he could keep it. The guy said, "Of Course!"
So he then took some scissors and started cutting off the green part next. He said that was the part that we would get to take home with us. Denman was so excited.
And now for the white part. We took off the ear phones and now couldn't wait to see how his arm looked. I got a good picture of when he watched him open the cast, but then he turned away and closed his eyes. I asked him, "What's wrong Denman?" He said, "Is it still twisted?" I felt so sorry for him. I told him to take a look. He opened one eye at a time and then looked at his arm and saw that it was all straight! And YES I cried!!!
He then started crying too. He said it felt funny and hurt. They said that is normal for the next couple of days so to be sure we continue to move it around to get the soreness out. We were both so sad now because I think we both thought it would be good as new.
We then had to go in for an x-ray and then to see the doctor. She told us it was healing up great but needed a couple of more weeks. She gave us a velcro cast to put on and said to minimize his activity for two more weeks. That scared me to DEATH... I said if you want me to contain him, you need to put the hard cast back on. Denman is NOT a still person, and knowing that we still have two more weeks of healing when he is DONE does not sound like fun to me!
We then headed to get him some pizza and ice cream. He for sure earned it today! I could tell that he was really hurting so we came home, took some Tylenol and watched Scooby Do. After an hour I could tell he was feeling much better. He played a little and then took a two hour nap.
Here he is enjoying his pizza and TV time. :)
When he got up from his nap, he was ready to go and get Natalie and show her that he got a new cast today. Please pray that we can keep this arm healing for two more weeks! He is already trying to straighten it out and move it around like they showed him to do. Such a brave little man.
WOOHOO!!!!! I am so glad that he got his cast off!!! Tell him Auntie Kelly said to be extra careful! Love him....Love HIM!!!
